Humanitarian Crisis Escalates as 90% of Gaza's Population Displaced
UN reports widespread displacement as civilian casualties rise amid ongoing conflict.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported that approximately 90% of Gaza’s population has been forced to flee their homes since the outbreak of armed conflict.
In a statement posted on their official social media channels, UNRWA expressed that the current humanitarian crisis mirrors historical events, noting that over 700,000 Palestinians were displaced during the events of 1948, an episode commonly referred to as the Nakba.
UNRWA emphasized that, ‘77 years later, Palestinians are still being forcibly displaced,’ highlighting the severe and ongoing humanitarian impacts of the current conflict.
The agency further indicated that many individuals have been displaced multiple times, with reports of some families being moved ten times or more.
On the ground, the Gaza Civil Defense reported significant civilian casualties, stating that more than 115 individuals were killed within a single day due to extensive Israeli airstrikes.
The Civil Defense spokesperson, Mahmoud Bessul, characterized the ongoing bombardments as a continuation of widespread killings, with the numbers of casualties continually rising.
Bessul asserted that the Israeli military is employing tactics aimed at reducing viable living space and emptying populated areas to exert pressure on the civilian population, which has raised substantial concerns over humanitarian conditions.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that the European Gaza Hospital, one of the largest medical facilities in the area, has completely ceased operations due to severe damage incurred from ongoing attacks.
The ministry reported that the bombardments inflicted critical damage on the hospital's infrastructure, affecting sewage systems, internal departments, and the access roads, thereby rendering the provision of medical care impossible.
