Al-Nasr and Qatar Club Vie for the UAE-Qatar Super Cup Title

Regional football clubs prepare for a fierce contest in the second UAE-Qatar Super Cup, reflecting ongoing athletic cooperation in the Middle East.
Al-Nasr and Qatar Club are set to clash in a highly anticipated encounter for the UAE-Qatar Super Cup, scheduled to take place at 8:00 PM today at the Al Maktoum Stadium.

This marks the second edition of the tournament that highlights cross-border sports ties between the UAE and Qatar, featuring teams from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha.

Al-Nasr qualifies for this competition as the runner-up in the 2023-2024 UAE President's Cup, whereas Qatar Club holds the same position from the previous Amir Cup in Qatar.

Per tournament regulations, if the match remains deadlocked at full time, a penalty shootout will decide the winner.

The inaugural edition of this tournament held last year included four participating teams and concluded with Shabab Al Ahli claiming the Super Shield by defeating Al-Duhail 2-1 at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai.

Meanwhile, Qatar's Al-Arabi clinched the Super Cup by overcoming Sharjah with a 1-0 victory at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

Al-Nasr enters this competition with positive momentum from the UAE Pro League, recently securing a thrilling 3-2 victory over Kalba, which places them fourth in the league standings, tied on points with third-place Al Wahda, albeit with inferior goal difference.

Nonetheless, they face challenges as midfielder Samir Memisevic will miss the game due to injury.

Qatar Club, on the other hand, has faced turbulent times in the Qatar Stars League.

A disheartening 4-1 defeat to Al-Duhail leaves them second from the bottom, with a meager 10 points, three points ahead of bottom-placed Al-Khor.

Alfred Schreuder, the Dutch head coach of Al-Nasr, expressed confidence as he described the match as a fresh challenge for his team.

Echoing optimism, he acknowledged the strength of their opponents, emphasizing their analytical approach in studying Qatar Club’s tactics.

"We deserve to play this match based on our performance last season," Schreuder stated, noting the quality of players like Javi Martinez and Percy Tau at Qatar Club.

Al-Nasr's captain, Adel Taarabt, expressed determination, highlighting the team's focus on winning rather than simply playing well.

"We know our game plan and believe that if we play at our level, we can defeat any team," Taarabt asserted.

Qatar Club’s Moroccan coach, Youssef Safri, voiced optimism, thanking Al-Nasr and the UAE Pro League for their warm hospitality and superb organization.

Safri acknowledged the pre-match disadvantages on paper but insisted on his team's capacity to present a strong challenge.

Pointing to his squad’s readiness, Safri praised Percy Tau as a significant asset introduced to the team ahead of the final.

"We have thoroughly analyzed Al-Nasr, an elite club in the UAE League," he said.

Javi Martinez, captain of Qatar Club, echoed a determined spirit, "This match does not require additional motivation.

Our goal is to capture the cup for our fans and Qatari football." He acknowledged Al-Nasr's offensive prowess but expressed confidence in their strategy to control the game from the outset.

Adequate arrangements for spectator comfort and security were confirmed during a planning meeting attended by both teams' representatives, police, a private security firm, and event organizers.

Specifically, six entrances have been allocated to Al-Nasr supporters (Gates 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, and 14), while Gates 17 and 18 are designated for fans of Qatar Club.
