UK: Former Football Association Leaders Call for World Cup Boycott Over FIFA Privatization Plan

Critics urge the Football Association and UEFA to withdraw from upcoming tournaments to oppose Gianni Infantino's £15 billion commercial scheme.
The Football Association is facing intense pressure to boycott upcoming FIFA tournaments following the announcement of a controversial £15 billion privatization scheme.

The plan, unveiled by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, proposes a private-investment model that would grant a group of investors control over the commercial interests of FIFA’s premier men's and women's competitions.

Former FA officials and prominent politicians are demanding that the FA "walk the walk" regarding its recent criticisms of Infantino.

David Bernstein, former FA chairman, described the scheme as "stinking" and called for a coordinated European withdrawal from the Women’s World Cup, the 2029 Club World Cup, and the 2030 men’s World Cup.

Mark Palios, former FA chief executive, noted that a UEFA-led boycott involving nations such as England, France, Germany, and Spain would represent a "financial disaster" for FIFA.

The proposal has ignited allegations of coercion.

Infantino reportedly issued a 53-day deadline to member associations, offering a $10 billion funding package if they approve the deal—a sum that would provide $40 million per association.

Those who reject the plan face an earnings reduction of nearly 75 percent, dropping to approximately $2.7 billion.

One European football executive characterized the ultimatum as "plain-sight bribery."

The investor group is led by Thrive Capital, a firm managed by Joshua Kushner.

Tensions are further heightened by Infantino's perceived alignment with US political interests and the involvement of J.P. Morgan as financial adviser.

While UEFA holds emergency talks to discuss a potential rejection, an effective boycott requires the unanimous agreement of all 55 member nations.
