Dubai International Events Position Emirate as Hub for Sustainable Development

CEO Saeed Al Tayer highlights Dubai's role in fostering global investments and partnerships in clean energy.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Founder of the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX), emphasized Dubai's global reputation as a premier destination for hosting international events and exhibitions, especially in the fields of sustainability and energy.

He noted that this reputation enhances the emirate's crucial role in accelerating sustainable development and adopting clean and renewable energy technologies.

He credited the visionary leadership of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for establishing Dubai as a global platform that gathers thousands of investors, decision-makers, experts, and companies from around the world.

Al Tayer stated that these events serve as a comprehensive platform for developing clean technologies and offering innovative financing solutions that encourage partnerships between the public and private sectors globally.

He added that they play a significant role in launching quality projects that support energy mix diversification and achieving carbon neutrality, while also contributing to the economic growth of the UAE by empowering national and local companies and enhancing the competitiveness of Emirati exports and products in vital sectors.

The energy sector is viewed as a key enabler of development and economic growth in the UAE, accounting for approximately one-third of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Events, conferences, and exhibitions offer opportunities for the UAE to highlight national and local companies specializing in the green energy sector and to expand their presence in global markets.

Al Tayer pointed out that multiple factors, such as the abundance of clean and renewable energy sources including solar energy, world-class infrastructure, a favorable regulatory environment in Dubai, and a growing knowledge economy, have all played vital roles.

He noted the state's investments in educational programs and events also contribute significantly to diversifying the country's energy exports to include cost-effective renewable energy resources, technologies, and services.

This strategy helps ensure that the UAE maintains its status as a key global energy exporter in line with the increasing demand and strengthens its leadership in the evolving global energy landscape, which is witnessing a rising interest in green energy.

A report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) indicated that renewable energy sources accounted for over 90% of the total energy expansion worldwide in 2024, adding 585 gigawatts of production capacity.

The success of Dubai in hosting major conferences and exhibitions, including the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) and Expo 2020 Dubai, underscores its qualifications as a global city and as the best destination for living, working, and investing.

It also highlights the UAE's growing role in leading global discussions on energy security, sustainability, and building a more sustainable future for coming generations.

Dubai also hosts the annual Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX), organized by DEWA under the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and under the patronage of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.

The exhibition reflects the UAE's steadfast commitment to unite efforts aimed at achieving national and global climate ambitions and expanding the use of green energy.

DEWA has announced that the registration for participation in the 27th edition of WETEX will open for its upcoming event scheduled to take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from September 30 to October 2, 2025. The previous edition held in 2024 witnessed participation from over 2,800 companies from 65 countries and attracted more than 50,000 visitors from around the globe.

The exhibition featured 21 international pavilions, reflecting the diversity and increasing global interest in sustainability and environmental technology.

As the largest exhibition in the region for the energy, water, green development, sustainability, smart cities, and sustainable mobility sectors, WETEX offers a critical opportunity for businesses and government entities to connect with thousands of exhibitors, participants, officials, and decision-makers to forge deals and build partnerships.

It also facilitates insights into market needs, particularly in light of the significant expansion in the adoption of renewable energy technologies in the UAE and the region as a whole.

Celebrating over a quarter-century of successful execution, WETEX has evolved into a leading global event supporting the green economy, becoming a central fixture on the sustainability agenda and a key enabler in achieving the UAE’s 2050 Climate Neutral Strategy and Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. It serves as a pivotal contributor to the UAE's status as a source of inspiration for countries aiming to develop sustainable energy sectors, reinforcing its leadership in future-making sectors.
