Elon Musk has publicly criticized the substantial tax bill proposed by President Donald Trump, which recently passed through the U.S. House of Representatives with considerable difficulty.

Musk indicated that the legislation undermines his efforts to reduce government spending.

In an interview with CBS News, he expressed his frustration about the extensive spending proposed in the bill, stating that it increases the budget deficit rather than decreasing it, and undermines the work being done by his team at the Department of Efficiency, which he had previously left.

CBS News aired a snippet of the interview, with the full segment set to air on "CBS Sunday Morning."

Trump has characterized this legislation, which introduces a series of tax cuts, as his "big, beautiful plan," and it has now been forwarded to the Senate.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, echoed concerns raised by some Republicans in both the House and Senate, who believe that the legislation will cost more than it should and are calling for further reductions in spending.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin commented on the Senate's progress with the bill, stating, "We are very far from an acceptable bill, it's hard to say when that will be." Other Republicans not only oppose further spending cuts but also reject certain provisions present in the House version, such as restrictions on Medicaid benefits and a swift elimination of clean energy tax incentives.

In the CBS interview, Musk noted, "I believe that a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t think it can be both.
