Partnership aims to enhance AI capabilities and infrastructure through a €8.5 billion investment near Paris.
Nvidia Corp. and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) investment entity MGX have announced a collaboration with several French firms to construct what is projected to be Europe’s largest artificial intelligence data center campus.
This initiative is set to take place near Paris and will feature a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts.
The announcement was made on Monday alongside French state-owned investment firm Bpifrance SACA and national AI champion Mistral AI at the Choose France summit held in Versailles.
The project stems from a series of AI cooperation agreements forged in February, which coincided with a visit by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to French President Emmanuel Macron.
During these discussions, Emirati officials expressed intentions to invest as much as €50 billion (approximately $56.4 billion) in French data centers, according to prior reports.
The new data center campus aligns with the UAE’s ambitions to diversify its economy and extend its geopolitical influence, while France is seeking to enhance its AI capabilities and achieve autonomy in technological innovation.
Earlier, Macron had revealed a €109 billion investment plan focusing on AI infrastructure to bolster France's competitive stance against the US and China.
Additional partners in this ambitious project include French conglomerate Bouygues SA, energy operator EDF Group, and Ecole Polytechnique, a prominent science and engineering university, which has a collaboration with the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence based in Abu Dhabi.
The data center campus entails an investment of €8.5 billion and is expected to see its first phase operating by 2028, according to a statement released from Macron’s office.
MGX is recognized for its investments in notable AI initiatives, including backing OpenAI and xAI, and plays a financial role in the US President
Donald Trump’s $100 billion AI investment plan, known as Stargate.
The project is managed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a significant figure in international finance and the current chair of G42, a notable Emirati tech conglomerate that is also in the process of constructing a 5-gigawatt data center in the UAE in collaboration with OpenAI.
