Swimming Temporarily Suspended at Khorfakkan Beach Due to Oil Patches
Local authorities have implemented a swimming ban at Al-Zubara beach following findings of surface oil pollution, prioritizing public safety.
The Municipality of Khorfakkan, located in the Emirate of Sharjah, has announced a temporary suspension of swimming activities along Al-Zubara Beach after detecting oil patches in the sea, which have caused surface pollution in the coastal area and pose an immediate risk to beachgoers and swimmers.
In a precautionary measure, the municipality has raised a red flag along the beach, warning visitors to stay away from the water until confirmation of the pollution's resolution.
Environmental and emergency teams are currently assessing the environmental situation and identifying sources of pollution in collaboration with relevant authorities to manage the spill and mitigate its spread.
The municipality emphasized that designated lifeguards will be prohibited from entering the water until the pollution has been fully addressed.
Noncompliance with the issued instructions may result in legal repercussions for offenders, and the responsibility for children lies entirely with their guardians during this period.
Additionally, the municipality has highlighted its emergency teams' readiness to respond to any field developments.
The colored flags displayed on the beach serve important advisory purposes: a red flag indicates a complete swimming ban, a green flag signifies safe water, a purple flag warns of dangerous marine creatures, and a yellow flag advises caution in swimming.
A combined red and yellow flag indicates a safe swimming area under the supervision of lifeguards.
Teams are working according to precise procedures to contain and control the oil patch.
The municipality noted that cooperation with specialized environmental authorities in the emirate has facilitated rapid and effective measures to minimize potential environmental impacts.
The importance of collaborative efforts among various relevant entities to protect the marine environment has been underscored, with continuous monitoring and environmental assessment ongoing to ensure the quality of coastal waters and prevent any pollution that might affect local ecosystems.
The municipality has also urged community members, especially beachgoers and fishermen, to report any observed pollutants or noticeable environmental changes immediately to enhance efforts aimed at safeguarding the marine environment and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.
