Arab League Summit: Secretary-General Warns of Israeli Aggression in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon

Ahmad Aboul Gheit highlights the risks of escalating tensions in the region due to Israeli policies at the 34th Arab League summit in Baghdad.
Ahmad Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, issued a dire warning regarding Israel's aggressive policies in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon during the opening of the 34th Arab League summit in Baghdad.

He stated that these actions could spark widespread confrontations and escalate tensions across the region.

In his address, Aboul Gheit criticized Israel’s approach, which he described as reckless, suggesting that it permits occupation forces to intensify conflicts under the pretext of security and establish buffer zones.

He emphasized that the Arab League unequivocally condemns these policies, calling attention to their severe implications for regional stability and security.

Aboul Gheit reaffirmed that the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state remains a central and historical issue for the Arab League, stressing the need for its realization as a practical reality.

He also expressed gratitude for the efforts of Egypt and Qatar in negotiating a ceasefire and acknowledged Saudi Arabia for its active leadership in the Arab-Islamic committee aimed at halting the war in Gaza.

On the situation in Syria, Aboul Gheit highlighted the country’s difficult phase and the substantial challenges it faces in establishing a new governance structure.

He voiced the Arab League's support for the Syrian government and its people in overcoming these difficulties, while also expressing confidence that lifting U.S. sanctions on Syria could foster a new economic environment that enhances the Syrian people's resilience.

In relation to Lebanon, Aboul Gheit articulated concerns over the historical challenges facing the nation, emphasizing the need for state sovereignty and the containment of arms within the state’s control amid ongoing Israeli aggression and violations of the country’s sovereignty.

He expressed hope that Lebanese authorities could fulfill their significant responsibility for the future of their country.

Regarding Yemen, the Secretary-General criticized the Houthi movement for monopolizing the country’s resources and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis faced by its people.

He asserted that the situation would not improve unless the Houthis recognized the untenable nature of the current circumstances and engaged in a national effort to restore unity in Yemen.

Concerning Libya, Aboul Gheit voiced concern over the ongoing division threatening the country’s unity, urging all parties to prioritize national interests and unity to prevent deterioration and facilitate comprehensive reconciliation that would enable Libya to progress towards a promising future deserving of its citizens.
