Five Asian Teams Secure Spots in 2026 World Cup, Saudi Arabia's Place Still Undecided
Jordan, Uzbekistan, Iran, South Korea, and Japan to represent Asia, while Saudi Arabia and Australia compete for the final spot.
Five Asian national teams have secured their qualifications for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The teams that have qualified are Jordan, Uzbekistan, Iran, South Korea, and Japan, marking Uzbekistan's first appearance in a World Cup.
The sixth and final Asian spot remains contested between Saudi Arabia and Australia, with both teams set to face each other on June 10 in Jeddah.
Currently, Australia holds a three-point lead over Saudi Arabia, benefiting from a superior goal difference as well.
Historic qualification for Jordan was achieved during the penultimate round of Asian qualifiers, where they secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Oman.
This success was further complemented by Iraq's loss to South Korea in the same group, confirming Jordan's advancement to the World Cup.
The qualification process is structured in three groups, each consisting of six teams, with the top two from each group advancing directly to the World Cup.
Meanwhile, teams finishing third and fourth in the groups will contest an Asian playoff, divided into two groups.
The leaders of these groups will also qualify for the World Cup, potentially increasing Asia's representation to eight teams.
An additional match will take place between the runners-up of the playoffs, with the winner moving on to a global playoff for a chance to secure a ninth Asian spot in the World Cup finals.
