Tragic Death of Indian Expat During Scuba Diving in Dubai
Issac Paul Olakkengil, 29, dies during a training session at Jumeirah Beach amid Eid Al Adha celebrations
A 29-year-old Indian expatriate, Issac Paul Olakkengil, died on Friday while participating in a scuba diving training session at Jumeirah Beach in Dubai.
The incident occurred during the Eid Al Adha holidays, when the deceased was spending time with family in the UAE.
Issac, an engineer residing in the region, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest after encountering difficulties breathing underwater.
According to a family member, David Pyarilos, who is assisting the grieving family with legal matters, the scuba diving session was part of a beginners’ training course at a designated area for diving in Dubai.
Eyewitnesses conveyed that Issac began to struggle with his breathing and became separated from the rest of his diving group before surfacing.
Immediate efforts were made to rescue Issac from the water; however, despite prompt transportation to a nearby hospital, he was not able to be revived.
Pyarilos noted that arrangements for the repatriation of Issac’s body are currently being coordinated with the relevant authorities.
In the wake of the incident, instructors in the area have underscored the importance of thorough checks on the credentials of diving schools before engaging in such activities.
Bimbo Calitis, a diving instructor and founder of a swim school in Jumeirah, stressed the need for learners to ensure their physical fitness prior to diving training.
He highlighted the critical nature of understanding potential medical emergencies that can arise while underwater.
Reports indicate that during the training, Issac’s associates were also affected.
Reshma, a member of the group, was rescued first, followed by the other participants.
Ivin, Issac's brother, reportedly collapsed upon arrival at the hospital but was reported to be out of danger.
The family is currently cooperating with local police, who have seized the diving equipment as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of now, Ivin has not been informed of his brother’s death, with family members concerned about the emotional impact of the news due to the close ties shared between the brothers.
