Lionel Messi Set for Return to Barcelona Post-Inter Miami
Reports indicate Messi's plan to conclude his time in Major League Soccer by 2025, with a possible return to Barcelona on the horizon.
Lionel Messi is anticipated to conclude his professional football career with Inter Miami at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Recent reports suggest that the Argentine superstar has already identified his next destination: a return to FC Barcelona, a club where he achieved significant milestones throughout his career.
According to statements made by Yanina Latour, a media personality and friend of Messi's family, Messi has expressed intentions to return to Barcelona upon fulfilling his commitments with Inter Miami.
In an interview with the Argentine newspaper 'La Nacion', Latour noted, 'Messi told me he is happy here in Miami, but he plans to return to Barcelona after his contract ends.'
Latour further revealed that Messi has no intention of extending his stay in Miami, asserting, 'My place is there, in Barcelona.'
Simultaneously, Jorge Mas, the co-owner of Inter Miami, has indicated the possibility of Messi remaining with the team until the opening of the new Freedom Park stadium in 2026. Mas remarked, 'Messi is committed to his contract until the end of the 2025 season.
We will sit down together to discuss his future.
I expect Messi to be our number 10 when we open our new stadium in the 2026 season.'
This year poses considerable challenges for Messi and Inter Miami, as the team prepares to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer.
Furthermore, Inter Miami is gearing up for the upcoming MLS 2025 season, which is set to commence soon.
Messi recently marked a successful start to the new season during a friendly match against Club América from Mexico, which ended in a 2-2 draw prior to Miami winning in a penalty shootout.
During this match, Messi scored a stunning goal in the 34th minute, following which he celebrated in a manner that has sparked controversy.
He pointed to his jersey and gestured with three fingers to the Mexican crowd, referencing Argentina’s three FIFA World Cup titles.
Additionally, Messi made a provocative gesture by showing a 'zero' with his hand, implying that Mexico has yet to win a World Cup title in its history.
This action prompted boos from the Mexican fans, further escalating tensions during the encounter.
