Sheikh Mohammed Announces Bureaucracy Reduction Performance Results of UAE Government Departments
Departments recognized for efficiency gains and those criticized for shortcomings in reducing bureaucracy as part of a nationwide initiative.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has publicly identified the best and worst-performing government departments in terms of reducing bureaucracy, highlighting efforts aimed at enhancing efficiency within the UAE's bureaucratic systems.
In a statement made via X on Sunday, Sheikh Mohammed noted that the Department of Justice, the Department of State, and the Department of Energy and Infrastructure emerged as the top three departments for their effectiveness in minimizing bureaucratic hurdles.
Conversely, the departments that performed the least effectively included Emirates Post, the Pensions Authority, and the Ministry of Sports.
Sheikh Mohammed articulated his views on bureaucracy, stating, "Government bureaucracy is the art of turning simple things into complex ones … and the art of creating administrative systems to combat individual creativity." He further elaborated on the detrimental effects of bureaucratic processes, asserting that procedures often take precedence over meaningful service delivery and that rigid systems can stifle innovation.
At the close of 2023, Sheikh Mohammed initiated a movement aimed at eradicating unnecessary bureaucratic structures across government departments, promoting a focus on improved services and operational efficiency for the benefit of citizens.
As part of these reforms, departments were tasked with eliminating 2,000 redundant procedures within a one-year timeframe.
In November 2023, the UAE launched the Zero Government Bureaucracy programme, designed to halve the time required to complete various government services.
Sheikh Mohammed reiterated the urgency for departments to adopt more efficient practices, warning that outdated bureaucratic systems could be overhauled through decisive action.
This push for reform reflects Sheikh Mohammed's ongoing commitment to enhancing public service efficiency within the UAE's government, as he emphasized the need for rapid, bold decisions to overcome entrenched bureaucratic obstacles.
