Sheikh Mohammed Initiates Dubai's Blue Line Metro Project

Foundation laid for the world's highest metro station as Dubai expands its transit network.
In a significant development for urban transport, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, laid the foundation stone for the inaugural station of the Blue Line of the Dubai Metro on June 9. This ambitious project aims to enhance public transportation capabilities across the emirate, with the first stage of the line expected to commence operations by September 9, 2029.

The Blue Line, which will extend 30 kilometers, features 14 stations and will increase the total length of Dubai's rail network to 131 kilometers with 78 stations.

The new Emaar Properties station, which will be the highest metro station in the world at 74 meters, is designed by the renowned American architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

This project is projected to accommodate up to 160,000 passengers daily and serve over 70,000 users by 2040.

The design of the Emaar Properties station showcases a distinct golden cylinder-like structure, highlighting the luxurious aesthetic associated with Dubai.

The station will offer integrated commercial and investment opportunities, indicative of the emirate's strategy to enhance its urban environment and mobility infrastructure.

This latest addition to the metro network coincides with the forthcoming 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro, a system that has transported over 2.527 billion passengers since its inception on September 9, 2009.

During the foundation ceremony, attendees observed a historical presentation that illustrated the vision of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who first envisioned a metro system to connect various districts of Dubai.

The event showcased a collection of archival photographs depicting the development of the metro since its launch.

The Blue Line is designed to address the growing transportation demands of an expanding population, projected to exceed one million residents in the areas it serves.

This network expansion also ties into the broader Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which emphasizes connectivity and reduced congestion.

The project is anticipated to alleviate traffic by approximately 20 percent along the main routes it operates.

The new line includes several key features: it will have both elevated and underground sections, with nine elevated stations and five underground stations, including three interchange stations at Creek Station on the Green Line, Centrepoint Station on the Red Line, and International City 1 Station on the Blue Line.

It is estimated that up to 320,000 passengers will utilize the Blue Line daily by 2040.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is managing the project, which has been awarded a construction contract worth Dh20.5 billion to a consortium of Turkish and Chinese companies — Mapa, Limak, and CRRC.

The Blue Line project is noted for adhering to green building standards, achieving Platinum Category certification for its sustainable design and operational features.

With the completion of the Blue Line, Dubai will establish a more integrated public transportation system, enhancing services to major districts including Mirdif, Al Warqa, Academic City, and Dubai Silicon Oasis.

This is part of an ongoing commitment to improve the quality of life in Dubai by providing efficient and sustainable transport solutions.
