Syria's Foreign Minister Expresses Gratitude to UAE During Baghdad Summit

Asaad al-Shaybani highlights Syria's recovery efforts and regional challenges at the Arab League summit.
At the 34th Ordinary Arab League Summit held in Baghdad, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani addressed the assembled leaders, stating that Syria has made significant strides toward recovery and stability.

He emphasized that Syria will not fall under the guardianship of any external power and will not serve as a battleground for geopolitical disputes.

Al-Shaybani remarked positively on the recent announcement by former U.S. President Donald Trump to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, describing it as an important step towards national recovery and reconstruction.

He expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their mediation efforts regarding this issue.

He further acknowledged the support of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as other Arab nations that have stood by the Syrian people during this critical period.

The Foreign Minister articulated that the lifting of sanctions represents the beginning of a hopeful path that he hopes will lead to genuine Arab cooperation aimed at achieving development, safeguarding Arab national security, and reinforcing regional stability.

Al-Shaybani asserted Syria's commitment to inclusivity, reinforcing that the country belongs to everyone, with no room for exclusion or marginalization.

He reiterated Syria’s stance on the unity of its territory and sovereignty, rejecting any form of external intervention.

He stated that the right to self-determination is an exclusive right of the Syrian people and condemned any attempts to fragment the state or seize parts of its territory.

He addressed ongoing challenges facing Syria, including the presence of ISIS, asserting that some external forces are attempting to revive and exploit the group.

He also highlighted the threats posed by attempts to instigate discord and support separatist formations and sectarian or nationalistic agendas.

Al-Shaybani called on Arab nations to support Syria's territorial integrity and population unity, encouraging assistance for the new Syrian government while rejecting any forms of intervention or partition that threaten national identity and regional stability.

He reiterated Syria's condemnation of the ongoing Israeli aggression in southern Syria, affirming the country's commitment to the 1974 disengagement agreement, which remains a legal basis for regulating the borders in the occupied Golan Heights.
