White House confirms Steve Witkoff's mission to negotiate a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine following successful initial talks.
The White House announced on Wednesday that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow this week to engage in discussions focused on establishing a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed journalists that Witkoff is scheduled to depart for Moscow later in the week.
The administration is urging Russia to accept a proposed 30-day ceasefire, which has been negotiated by American and Ukrainian officials.
National Security Advisor Mike Walters had a consultation with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday to further facilitate the talks.
President
Donald Trump expressed hope on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin would agree to the ceasefire proposal; however, he did not specify what measures might be employed to influence Putin's decision-making.
Witkoff, who also plays a significant role in negotiations concerning the Middle East, previously met with Putin in February to negotiate the release of American detainee Mark Vogel.
On Tuesday, Trump stated that he plans to speak directly with Putin, likely within the week, as part of ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
