High-ranking UAE official supports Arab League’s call for Hamas to relinquish control over Gaza amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian concerns.
Dr. Anwar Gargash, a senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has publicly supported the Arab League's recent call for Hamas to relinquish its administration of the Gaza Strip.
Speaking on Friday, Gargash reaffirmed the statement made by Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, which urged the Palestinian group to step down from its governing role.
In his remarks, Gargash highlighted that the interests of the Palestinian population should take precedence over those of Hamas, particularly in light of the current humanitarian crisis following the group's attack on October 7, 2023, which escalated the ongoing conflict in the region.
Gargash stated, "The rational call of Ahmed Aboul Gheit for Hamas to step down from the administration of Gaza is appropriate," emphasizing the need for prioritizing the welfare of the Palestinian people amid discussions surrounding their potential displacement from Gaza.
The situation in Gaza has deteriorated significantly, with reports indicating substantial destruction to the region's social and human fabric as a result of continued violence and military operations.
The diplomatic dialogue surrounding Gaza has gained urgency, particularly with various proposals regarding the future of the Palestinian territories.
At a recent World Government Summit in Dubai, Arab officials firmly rejected any suggestions of forcibly relocating Palestinians from Gaza, which had been a topic of discussion stemming from a proposal by former US President
Donald Trump aimed at facilitating reconstruction efforts in the area.
Jasem Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), articulated a consistent Arab perspective, stating, "There is no one in the Arab community that accepts the idea of forced displacement."
Aboul Gheit also expressed his concerns regarding perceptions of the United States’ role in the region, describing the US approach as “ambiguous” and warning against efforts that could be interpreted as an attempt to erase Palestinian identity in Gaza.
He stated, “Relocating Gaza’s population would be an injustice” and reaffirmed the Arab world’s long-standing opposition to any such proposals, marking nearly a century of resistance to forced displacement and affirming the rights of Palestinians to their land and self-determination.
