UAE Search and Rescue Team Strengthens Global Humanitarian Role

The elite UAE team gains recognition for swift disaster response efforts in Myanmar following a devastating earthquake.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reaffirmed its position as a leader in global humanitarian assistance with the recent deployment of its specialized search and rescue team to Myanmar.

This action followed a significant earthquake that led to widespread destruction and loss of life across the country.

The UAE’s swift response has highlighted its commitment to providing immediate aid in times of natural disasters.

In light of the earthquake's devastation, which left a significant impact on local infrastructure and communities, the UAE dispatched its elite search and rescue team under the direct orders of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

The team was formally recognized last week by the Myanmar government for their exemplary efforts in the most severely affected regions.

The UAE’s Search and Rescue Team comprises personnel from Abu Dhabi Police, the National Guard, and the Joint Operations Command, all of whom bring specialized expertise to emergency response situations.

Operating under challenging circumstances, the team employed strict safety protocols to conduct structural assessments and rescue operations, collaborating closely with local authorities and international partners to maximize the effectiveness of their mission.

During the past week, the team has executed rescue operations at six separate sites in the affected regions.

Utilizing a rotational shift system, rescue personnel worked both day and night to ensure comprehensive coverage of the areas in need.

The UAE’s Search and Rescue Team has developed a notable reputation globally for their professionalism and effectiveness, previously responding to crises in countries such as Türkiye, Syria, Morocco, Libya, Pakistan, and Indonesia.

Their track record includes significant missions such as the 2014 Malaysian plane crash in Indonesia and the 2015 Ukraine crash investigation.

With a composition of medical professionals, paramedics, technical rescue specialists, and air support teams, the UAE unit is recognized as one of the most capable and disciplined in the world.

They are equipped with advanced technology tailored for various disaster scenarios, including specialized services such as Disaster Victim Identification (DVI).

The team utilizes a comprehensive array of vehicles and technologies in their operations, such as air ambulances, drones for aerial surveillance, mobile field hospitals, and advanced rescue equipment.

These assets are augmented by aerial support and data collection systems to enable rapid assessments of disaster-affected areas.

The UAE Search and Rescue Team has achieved a prestigious “Heavy Classification” from the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), affirming their readiness for international missions.

Additionally, their Disaster Victim Identification unit has gained recognition from INTERPOL, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region.
