Chennai Resident Wins UAE Draw's Largest Prize of Dh100 Million
Sriram Rajagopalan's heartfelt letter highlights the impact of his sudden wealth.
Sriram Rajagopalan, a former engineer based in Chennai, became the recipient of the largest individual prize in the history of the Emirates Draw, amounting to Dh100 million.
The victory came after he randomly selected numbers using a stylus while keeping his eyes closed, ultimately winning on March 16 during the MEGA7 game.
In a letter addressed to Emirates Draw, Rajagopalan expressed his overwhelming gratitude, detailing the profound joy his win brought to his family, particularly to his 88-year-old mother.
He described her previous struggles and the transformation of her demeanor following the announcement of his win, stating, "Her face, once tired from life’s struggles, now glows with happiness."
Rajagopalan, who moved back to India in 2023 after a long career in Saudi Arabia, reflected on the changes that this financial windfall would bring to his life.
He mentioned experiencing relief from financial worries and emphasized his intention to create generational wealth, including plans to donate a portion of his winnings to charity.
The retiree concluded his letter with a heartfelt acknowledgment of how the win has changed his life, poignantly noting, "You haven’t just changed my life, you have given me a new one."
Emirates Draw, operated by Tycheros, paused its UAE operations at the end of 2023 following regulatory updates from the UAE's Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority.
The company is now focusing on expanding its reach into international markets.
Rajagopalan's story is not unique among winners of the Emirates Draw and its counterparts.
For instance, in October 2021, Pakistani expatriate Junaid Rana won Dh50 million in the Mahzooz draw.
Rana, who previously worked as a driver earning Dh6,000 a month, utilized his winnings to reunite his family in Dubai and make investments back in Pakistan while fulfilling personal aspirations, such as purchasing a dream car.
Additionally, in December 2023, Indian resident Aravind Appukuttan from Sharjah won Dh25 million in the Big Ticket draw through a free ticket.
Appukuttan, who works as a salesperson, shared his winnings with 20 friends and expressed his intention to pay off loans while saving a portion for future needs.
These stories exemplify how sudden wealth from draws can bring about significant changes in the lives of the winners and their families, with numerous individuals describing their winnings as transformative experiences.
