Dubai Health Authority Issues Warning on Sun Risks for People with Albinism
Health officials highlight key sun exposure dangers for individuals with albinism on World Albinism Awareness Day.
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has issued a warning regarding three main health risks faced by individuals with albinism when exposed to direct sunlight.
These risks include the development of freckles, the appearance of moles, and the potential for sunburn.
The agency emphasized the importance of preventive measures to mitigate these harmful effects, particularly in light of World Albinism Awareness Day.
In its statement, DHA characterized albinism as a rare genetic disorder that affects the body’s production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color.
Individuals with this condition may also experience vision problems.
Key signs and symptoms associated with albinism include white or very light hair, extremely fair skin compared to family members, as well as pale eyelashes and eyebrows.
Eye color may vary significantly, ranging from light blue to brown.
The DHA urged individuals diagnosed with albinism to adhere to several protective guidelines to safeguard their skin and eyes.
These recommendations include the use of sunscreen, wearing appropriate clothing, utilizing sunglasses, and seeking shade, particularly during peak sunlight hours when the sun is at its highest intensity.
They also advised consulting with a healthcare professional upon noticing any skin changes.
The Dubai Health Authority reaffirmed the critical role of early awareness and appropriate healthcare in helping individuals with albinism navigate daily challenges, promoting a safe, healthy, and productive life.
