Dubaï Police Arrests 41 Individuals in Major Begging Syndicate Operation
The operation, named 'Al-Masbah', targets organized begging in the emirate, resulting in significant arrests and increased public awareness initiatives.
The Dubai Police Department has issued a public warning regarding the dangers posed by professional beggars who exploit the goodwill of residents.
In a recent operation dubbed 'Al-Masbah', the police successfully apprehended a syndicate consisting of 41 beggars of Arab nationality, all of whom were residing in a single hotel.
The operation was part of the ongoing campaign 'Combat Begging', aimed at maintaining the emirate's dignified image and increasing public awareness about licensed charitable donations.
The police urged the public to report any sightings of beggars directly to the authorities through the toll-free number (901) or via the 'Police Eye' service on the Dubai Police smartphone application.
Complaints about online begging can also be reported through the 'E-crime' platform.
The arrests followed a public tip-off received by the police's call center (901), indicating that several individuals were selling prayer beads and other accessories as part of their begging activities.
Upon investigation, police surveillance identified three individuals engaging in these activities.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that the detained individuals were part of an organized group that had entered the country on visitor visas and were utilizing the hotel as their base of operations.
Collaboration with the hotel management led to the apprehension of 28 members of the syndicate first, with the remaining 10 being captured the following day as they attempted to relocate to another venue.
Dubai Police report that the group had accumulated over 60,000 dirhams through their activities.
The ongoing 'Combat Begging' initiative has reportedly led to a yearly decline in the number of beggars in the emirate, attributed to strict enforcement measures against those apprehended.
Additionally, the Dubai Police have emphasized their commitment to continuously monitoring the evolving tactics used by scammers and beggars, working towards legislative and practical measures to curb these activities effectively.
Law enforcement officials have noted that beggars often target sensitive times for emotional appeals, such as religious observances and holidays, engaging in deceptive behavior that violates local laws.
This proactive approach underscores the police’s role in preserving community integrity and public trust.
