Egyptian Truck Drivers Stranded Amid Restrictions on Aid to Gaza
Drivers remain determined to deliver food despite ongoing difficulties and restrictions at the border.
In the city of El Arish, North Sinai, Egyptian truck drivers are currently experiencing significant delays while attempting to deliver essential supplies to Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan.
Their efforts have been hampered by restrictions imposed by Israel, preventing the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip.
One truck driver, Hamdi Ahmed, expressed frustration, stating, "We are carrying food and drink," and questioned the circumstances faced by civilians in Gaza.
He noted that they have been stranded for two months, warning that much of the aid is at risk of spoiling.
The drivers have resorted to cooking their meals on the roadside within designated areas of their trucks, having not returned home for iftar—the evening meal that breaks the fast during Ramadan.
Ahmed articulated a sense of solidarity, reaffirming their commitment: "As long as there are supplies, we will return to bring food and drink to Gaza.
We have no problem with that; even if we spend a long time in Gaza, we will bring them their necessities because they are our brothers."
Despite their desire to be with their families during Ramadan, the drivers remain hopeful about delivering the supplies so that Palestinians can break their fasts.
Ahmed remarked, "The situation here is difficult...
It is hard to break your fast away from your family, but thank God, we hope to deliver these items to our brothers in Gaza because it is impossible for us to eat and drink while they cannot."
Another driver, Abdul Hamid, pointed out that they have not had iftar at home even once during Ramadan, expressing a wish to deliver needed food supplies.
"We are united with them, heart and soul, and God willing, the siege will be lifted from them," he added.
Since the first fragile ceasefire ended on March 1, Israel has maintained a comprehensive blockade of Gaza, restricting the entry of goods.
The blockade is part of demands placed on Hamas for the release of remaining hostages without initiating negotiations to conclude the ongoing conflict.
