Elder Square: A New Haven for Seniors in Dubai Amidst Global Conflict
91-year-old Norma Malouf finds community and purpose at Elder Square following her evacuation from Sudan.
In 2023, 91-year-old Norma Malouf's life pivoted dramatically as she was evacuated from Sudan due to escalating conflict.
Hearing gunfire near her home, Malouf contacted the French consulate for assistance, leading to her relocation to Dubai.
Despite the turmoil left behind, which included leaving her five dogs, Malouf discovered a new sense of belonging at Elder Square, an elder daycare center in Dubai.
Situated in Jumeirah, Elder Square opened in May 2024 and was founded by Tamara Binladin, who aimed to create a vibrant community for seniors rather than merely providing medical services.
Activities offered at the center include arts and crafts, dancing, and karaoke, all designed to cater to the diverse preferences and abilities of its members.
During an iftar gathering at Elder Square, Malouf shared her experiences and connected with fellow seniors, their families, and visitors.
She stated, "I enjoy it here every day; I get to meet people, talk to them, and get to know them." Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, "What happened in Sudan was difficult, but I refuse to let it define me.
Life goes on, and I’ve learned to embrace every moment.
At Elder Square, I’ve found a new meaning to life.
This place has become my second home, where I can share my stories and create new memories with wonderful people."
Among the attendees of the iftar was 89-year-old Syed Shahid Husain and 76-year-old Ranendra Narayan Kachari.
Husain, who affectionately refers to himself as "the youngest 89," and Kachari joined Elder Square seven months prior.
Kachari noted a significant change in his outlook since becoming a member, explaining, "Before I found this place, I felt really lonely.
Now, I look forward to it every week.
It excites me." Kachari’s daughter echoed this sentiment, highlighting the positive transformation in her father’s demeanor: "He finally has something to look forward to.
It’s been a wonderful transformation."
Binladin, the founder of Elder Square, underscored the center's holistic approach, combining wellness and enjoyment.
"Our goal is to ensure every senior feels valued and engaged.
We've seen incredible attendance at our events," she stated.
The center customizes activities based on members' interests, emphasizing mobility, calligraphy, and social interaction.
Elder Square also serves as an inclusive community hub, featuring a café that welcomes individuals of all ages.
Binladin highlighted the center's mission to foster intergenerational connections: "We aim to foster connections among all age groups." Weekly events, including sound healing sessions and educational talks, provide opportunities for engagement that benefit the entire community.
