Gulf Cooperation Council's Commitment to Marine Environmental Protection
GCC Secretary-General highlights regional efforts at UN conference in Nice, France.
Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasized the significant and ongoing efforts of the GCC member states to protect marine environments, particularly in the Arabian Gulf.
These initiatives have resulted in tangible benefits for the marine environment and have addressed the ecological challenges facing this vital region.
During his participation in the session unveiling the recommendations from the 'Rising Ocean Levels and Coastal Resilience' summit, held on the sidelines of the United Nations Third Ocean and Atmosphere Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France, Al-Budaiwi acknowledged the importance of local government representatives, experts, and stakeholders from around the world in addressing climate and sustainable development issues.
He underscored the critical need for regional and international collaborative actions to combat climate change, stressing the transformation of climate commitments into practical steps that ensure the sustainability of the planet—particularly for vulnerable coastal areas and marine communities.
This aims to enhance resilience against future environmental challenges while safeguarding coastal populations and promoting their well-being.
The involvement of the GCC in such specialized conferences reflects its dedication to environmental and climate-related issues through the enhancement of regional and international cooperation.
The GCC is adopting ambitious strategies for climate adaptation, focusing on coastal areas that are vital to the region's economic and social fabric, in alignment with the sustainable development visions adopted by its member states.
On the sidelines of the UNOC3, Al-Budaiwi met with Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, to discuss cooperative relations between the two entities.
Their discussions aimed to enhance joint coordination on issues of mutual interest and to bolster economic and investment cooperation, contributing to stronger bilateral ties and mutual goals.
Al-Budaiwi also highlighted the various investment relations between the GCC member states and several countries and organizations.
He confirmed the GCC’s commitment to expanding cooperation in essential and strategic sectors, aiming to foster and enhance economic and investment partnerships with nations around the globe and various regional and international blocs.
