Moscow describes the war as existential; Zelensky urges allies to increase pressure on Russia
Recent developments in Ukraine have seen a significant escalation, with Russian forces launching a large-scale attack on Kyiv and multiple other regions in response to recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.
The Kremlin characterized the conflict as an existential matter, while Kyiv urged its Western allies to intensify pressure on Moscow.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia conducted intensive missile and drone bombardments on the capital overnight, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
Explosions were heard resonating across the city.
The military administration of Kyiv confirmed that the death toll in the attacks reached three after the city’s mayor initially estimated the number to be four.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that the three fatalities included first responders who rushed to the scene of one of the attacks.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated on the social media platform X that "throughout the night, Russia retaliated for the destruction of its drones by attacking civilians in Ukraine, damaging multiple high-rise buildings and energy infrastructure."
President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that at least 49 individuals were injured across the country during nighttime assaults, which also targeted various towns and cities apart from Kyiv, involving over 400 drones and 40 missiles.
Zelensky called on Ukraine's Western allies to amplify their pressure on Russia, condemning the devastation in Kherson resulting from the Russian bombardment.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces executed a significant strike on military targets and related sites in Ukraine during the night before last.
The Russian army stated that it launched long-range weapons from air, sea, and land, successfully hitting what it identified as a group of military-related targets.
The Defense Ministry also reported that Russian forces captured an area in Fedoryvka in eastern Ukraine.
Additionally, Russia announced that it had faced heavy Ukrainian drone attacks on airports and industrial areas the previous day.
The Russian Defense Ministry noted that 174 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted across several regions, including the border regions of Kursk and Belgorod, as well as Crimea.
Furthermore, the air defense systems reportedly destroyed three Neptune missiles over the Black Sea.
Ukraine, for its part, announced successful strikes against two Russian military airports during the night from Thursday to Friday, targeting three fuel depots in the Engels base located in Saratov Oblast, as well as the Dyagilevo base in Ryazan Oblast.
In related remarks, the Kremlin reiterated that the war in Ukraine is an existential issue for Russia, responding to a question regarding former U.S. President
Donald Trump's characterization of the conflict as a playground fight.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, "Trump has the right to express his own opinion, but for Russia, this is an existential matter concerning our national interests, security, and the future of our country and children."
Amid these developments, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un pledged unconditional support for Russia across all spheres, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, expressing confidence that Moscow would prevail.
Kim received Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu in Pyongyang, stating that North Korea would provide unreserved support for Russia's stance and foreign policies on all critical international issues, particularly regarding Ukraine.
