Meta's AI chatbot failed to recognize Donald Trump as the current U.S. President, prompting an emergency response.
Meta, the parent company of
Facebook and WhatsApp, has initiated an urgent internal procedure to address an issue with its AI-driven chatbot.
This problem centers on the chatbot's failure to correctly identify
Donald Trump as the current President of the United States, after his inauguration on January 20, 2025. Despite the official swearing-in of Republican
Donald Trump as President on Monday, January 20, 2025, succeeding Democrat
Joe Biden, Meta’s AI chatbot continued to identify Biden as the current U.S. President until Thursday.
The discrepancy was highlighted in a test conducted by Reuters.
On Thursday, when queried about the identity of the U.S. President, the AI chatbot responded, "The current President of the United States is
Joe Biden, although
Donald Trump was sworn in as President on January 20, 2025."
In response to this error, Meta deployed an urgent protocol known within the company as S.E.V. (Site Events and Voids), used for resolving critical issues in their services.
Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts addressed the situation, stating, "Everyone is aware that
Donald Trump is the President of the United States.
Occasionally, generative AI systems might produce outdated results, and we are committed to continuously improving our features."
