Saudi Arabia Experiences Unseasonal Cold Wave as Temperatures Plummet
A severe cold front causes freezing temperatures and frost formation in northern and central regions of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing a mid-level cold wave, with temperatures forecasted to dip below freezing in several areas, particularly in the northern and central regions.
The Saudi Weather and Climate Association has indicated that the cold spell started today, Monday, and is expected to affect these regions until Wednesday.
Early morning temperatures in northern Saudi Arabia may fall below zero degrees Celsius, while parts of central Saudi Arabia are likely to see temperatures ranging between zero and four degrees.
This drop in temperatures is anticipated to lead to the formation of frost and the freezing of water, especially in less populated areas.
The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has predicted a significant decrease in temperatures across the northern parts of the country, with forecasts of overnight frost and fog during the early morning hours.
Additionally, strong surface winds are expected to cause dust and sandstorms in regions including Tabuk, Medina, and the coastal areas of Mecca, as well as in the Eastern Province, Riyadh, and Najran.
The effects are also set to extend to the eastern highlands of Asir and Al Baha.
This cold wave has been identified by climatologists as 'Bard Al Ajooz,' a term that refers to a well-known late-season cold front typically observed prior to the arrival of spring.
Dr. Abdullah Al Misnad, a climate professor, noted that the cold front began infiltrating northern Saudi Arabia on Friday and will progressively spread southward, eastward, and westward, with temperatures notably dropping in Riyadh by Sunday.
The intensity of the cold wave will vary by region, with the northern regions experiencing the peak effects on Monday and Tuesday.
Central areas will feel the strongest impact on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Medina is expected to be affected most on Tuesday.
The Eastern Province and Najran will likely experience the cold wave's strongest impact on Wednesday.
The southwestern quarter of Saudi Arabia is anticipated to confront lesser effects from this cold snap.
As Ramadan approaches, a gradual rise in temperatures is expected, although Dr. Al Misnad has cautioned that subzero temperatures may persist in the northern regions for as long as five consecutive days.
Furthermore, he indicated that the snow line might lower to 800 meters above sea level in the far north during the early hours of Monday and Tuesday.
