Sovereignty Secures Belmont Stakes Victory for Godolphin
The three-year-old colt continues to shine, adding another prestigious title to his achievements.
The colt Sovereignty, racing under the Godolphin banner, has achieved a significant milestone for Emirati horses by winning the Belmont Stakes, a key race in the U.S. Triple Crown initiative, held at Saratoga Race Course in the United States.
This victory follows his previous triumph in the esteemed Kentucky Derby just a month earlier.
Sovereignty's win in the Belmont Stakes marks Godolphin's second title in this renowned race, previously claimed by Essential Quality in 2021. The three-year-old colt solidified his position as one of the top contenders in North America by completing the 2,000-meter Grade I race in a time of 2:00.69 minutes, finishing three lengths ahead of his closest competitor, Journalism, ridden by Umberto Rispoli and trained by Michael McCarthy.
In third place was Baeza, with Flavien Prat in the saddle and under the management of John Servis.
This race mirrored the previous encounter between the two frontrunners, with similar racing dynamics observed at the Kentucky Derby, where Sovereignty won by one and a half lengths.
In the Belmont Stakes, Sovereignty showcased a powerful performance, launching ahead in the stretch despite the challenging, rain-soaked track conditions.
Michael Banahan, the Director of Thoroughbred Production at Godolphin in the U.S., expressed his elation following the victory, noting the meticulous training overseen by Bill and his team.
He acknowledged that Sovereignty's capabilities were evident before the Kentucky Derby, and the horse's ability to compete successfully again, especially against strong competitors like Journalism, is a commendable achievement.
Banahan remarked on the strategic decision to participate in the Belmont Stakes following a five-week break, indicating that this plan was crucial for the colt's performance.
He emphasized the goal of maintaining the horse's abilities over the long term while eagerly anticipating future races, including the Travers Stakes, which holds special significance for the team, as they aim for victory after previously winning it.
Trainer Bill Mott reiterated the consistency of performance among the top three horses from the Derby to the Belmont, identifying Sovereignty, Journalism, and Baeza as extraordinary competitors.
He noted that opting out of the Preakness Stakes was a correct decision in light of their focus on the Belmont.
Jockey Junior Alvarado highlighted the thrill of the competition, remarking on the intense challenge posed by Journalism, who also showed remarkable resilience post-Preakness.
Alvarado lauded Sovereignty's performance, affirming that the horse earned his victory.
In the Belmont Stakes, Sovereignty started well on the drier track, initially competing for a top position.
Journalism recovered from a sluggish start to join the frontrunners as the race progressed.
The race unfolded with Rodriguez and Crudo establishing a lead.
As they reached the latter stages, both Journalism and Sovereignty closed in on the leaders, setting the stage for a final showdown.
Sovereignty surged ahead in the last furlong, displaying a commanding performance with a final margin of three lengths, further establishing Godolphin's reputation in thoroughbred racing after their win in the Belmont Stakes in 2021 with Essential Quality.
Baeza retained his third-place position, finishing three and a half lengths behind.
