The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made a significant international achievement by securing its first presidency of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, known as UN-Habitat, along with a seat on its executive council.
This success underscores the UAE’s prominent role in supporting sustainable urban development and aligns with global sustainable development goals.
The election took place during the UN-Habitat Assembly, held in Nairobi, Kenya, in which the UAE shared the presidency with Malaysia following a competitive selection process.
The UN-Habitat Assembly, comprising 193 member states, is the highest decision-making body within the UN-Habitat programme, focusing on shaping global policies aimed at improving living conditions in urban areas and enhancing the quality of life for urban communities.
In response to the election, Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei, UAE's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, congratulated the leadership of the UAE on this significant achievement.

The UAE aims to leverage its newly acquired leadership position to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Al Mazrouei emphasized that the shared presidency with Malaysia and the executive council membership will create new opportunities for enhancing dialogue among member states and sharing best practices worldwide.
He added that the UAE intends to lead collaborative efforts to foster innovation in urban housing and establish pioneering models to address challenges posed by rapid urban growth and climate change.
Al Mazrouei confirmed plans to continue cooperation with member states, civil society organizations, and the private sector to develop clear visions and innovative action plans that meet the needs of global communities and provide adequate and safe housing for all residents.
In this context, Mohammed Al Mansoori, Director of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, remarked that this achievement signifies the genuine efforts made by the UAE in developing a sustainable and smart urban housing system.
He noted that the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme remains a critical national pillar that has enhanced the country’s global standing in this field by providing innovative housing solutions that meet high standards of quality and environmental and social sustainability.
Al Mansoori expressed gratitude to the national team from the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE Embassy in Nairobi, for their outstanding efforts over three and a half years leading up to the successful candidacy for UN-Habitat positions.
