UAE Businessman Pledges Dh2.5 Million to Support Families of Air India Crash Victims

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, a UAE-based philanthropist and founder of Burjeel Holdings, has announced a commitment of Dh2.5 million to aid the families of medical students and doctors who were victims of the recent Air India Flight 171 disaster.
The crash occurred in Ahmedabad, India, on June 12, when a Boeing 787 struck the hostel and mess blocks of BJ Medical College.
The incident resulted in the deaths of four medical students and several family members of medical professionals, with additional injuries reported among the student population.
The students who lost their lives in the crash were identified as Jaiprakash Choudhary, Manav Bhadu, Aaryan Rajput, and Rakesh Diyora, all at the beginning stages of their medical careers.
The plane hit the Atulyam hostel complex during lunchtime, leading to significant destruction and chaos.
Survivors described scenes of devastation, with personal belongings scattered amid the rubble.
Dr. Vayalil, who shared that his decision to provide financial support was deeply personal, reflected on his own experiences as a medical student living in similar hostels.
He expressed solidarity with the medical community and highlighted the emotional impact of the tragedy.
His relief package includes approximately Dh426,000 (around Rs10 million) for the families of the deceased, Dh85,000 for each of the five seriously injured students, and similar support for other affected families.
The aid will be distributed in collaboration with the Junior Doctors' Association at BJ Medical College, ensuring that the financial assistance reaches those in need promptly.
Dr. Vayalil emphasized the importance of community support, noting that the loss of these young men, who were on the path to becoming medical professionals, underscores a collective responsibility to remember their contributions and aspirations.
The Junior Doctors' Association continues to work with authorities to facilitate additional assistance for the affected families.
