UAE Expands Support for Lebanon During Meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam
Sheikh Mohamed reaffirms UAE's commitment to Lebanon's stability and development amid ongoing political challenges.
On November 7, 2023, President Sheikh Mohamed of the United Arab Emirates met with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in Abu Dhabi, where he reiterated the UAE's support for Lebanon and its aspirations for stability and prosperity.
The meeting took place at Qasr Al Bahr as part of Prime Minister Salam's working visit to the UAE, which included participation in the Arab Media Summit in Dubai.
Sheikh Mohamed emphasized the UAE's commitment to strengthening Lebanon's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He expressed the Emirates' willingness to back all initiatives that contribute to Lebanon's development and stability, according to the state news agency Wam.
This meeting follows recent efforts by the UAE to foster closer ties with Lebanon, particularly as the country seeks to emerge from a prolonged period of political instability.
Earlier in January, the UAE announced the resumption of its diplomatic activities at its embassy in Beirut, a move viewed as a significant step towards restoring robust bilateral relations.
Furthermore, a long-standing travel ban preventing UAE citizens from visiting Lebanon was lifted on May 7, highlighting the positive trajectory of relations between the two nations.
Sheikh Mohamed and Prime Minister Salam also engaged in discussions regarding regional security issues and the necessity of promoting peace in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Salam extended his gratitude to Sheikh Mohamed for the assistance provided to the Lebanese people and reiterated Lebanon's interest in enhancing partnerships with the UAE across various sectors.
The meeting was attended by several prominent officials, including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, and Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, among others.
During the Arab Media Summit, Prime Minister Salam, who previously served as president of the International Court of Justice, addressed the challenges faced by Lebanon.
He highlighted that the country requires approximately $14 billion to rebuild its infrastructure following the devastating impacts of the recent conflicts, including the war involving Hezbollah.
Salam stated, 'Lebanon, worn down by conflicts, foreign tutelage and internal fragmentation, has decided to reclaim its voice and its state.' He further affirmed Lebanon's commitment to embarking on a path of reform and emphasized the necessity for the state to hold exclusive authority over arms.
