UAE Authorities Warn Against Fraudulent Traffic Fine Discount Promises
Abu Dhabi Police caution residents about scams claiming significant discounts on traffic penalties.
Abu Dhabi Police have alerted citizens and residents about an increase in fraudulent websites and social media accounts that falsely claim to offer substantial reductions on traffic fines, including discounts of up to 90 percent.
These accounts often promise the cancellation of vehicle impoundments and the removal of black points from drivers’ records, misleading the public to gain personal information and money.
In an official statement, Abu Dhabi Police emphasized the importance of relying on verified sources for traffic-related information, categorizing the activities of these online entities as entirely fictitious and aimed primarily at committing fraud.
The police noted that there has been a notable rise in these deceptive accounts across various social media platforms.
The force highlighted that services claiming to adjust or eliminate traffic fines, remove black points, or offer expedited licensing processes for drivers are not recognized by any official traffic or police department.
As part of a public awareness initiative, Abu Dhabi Police reiterated the need to safeguard personal data and remain vigilant against online scams and fraudulent activities.
To counter this trend, Abu Dhabi Police are collaborating with law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, and social media platforms to address and mitigate cybercrime.
The police have also underscored the critical need for the public to verify any information before sharing it, advising against the circulation of unconfirmed news or rumors.
Additionally, Abu Dhabi Police reminded residents of the official ‘Initiative: Act Early & Benefit,’ which provides a legitimate 35 percent discount on traffic fines if paid within 60 days of the offense (excluding serious violations) and a 25 percent discount if paid within a period extending to one year.
In response to fraudulent activities, the public is encouraged to report any suspected scams by visiting the nearest police station or using the Abu Dhabi Police smart app.
Concerns can also be communicated via the Aman hotline at 8002626, through text message at 2828, or by emailing aman(at)adpolice.gov.ae.
Recently, numerous vehicle owners have reported encountering misleading advertisements on anonymous social media accounts promoting unrealistic traffic-related services.
Many individuals recognized the fraudulent nature of these offers, particularly those suggesting individuals could renew their driving licenses without being physically present—an illegal procedure in the UAE.
Moreover, witnesses of these fraudulent claims noted that the accounts were newly created with minimal followers, raising suspicions.
Some motorist testimonies referred to similar scam advertisements from the previous year, which falsely guaranteed a 50 percent reduction on traffic fines.
As part of ongoing efforts to manage misinformation, the UAE Media Council has introduced a community reporting platform to empower residents to report fake news and misleading advertisements.
This initiative aims to enhance public trust in media while employing artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring of digital content.
The Media Council's Secretary-General stated that this new platform, combined with awareness campaigns, will take a phased approach to ensure media accountability without stifling free speech.
Additionally, a new licensing system is being developed to regulate and support media operations while promoting responsible content creation among digital creators and advertisers.
