UAE Mediates Release of 410 Prisoners in Ukraine-Russia Conflict
Successful negotiations lead to the exchange of 205 Ukrainian and 205 Russian captives.
On May 6, 2025, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the successful mediation of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in the release of 410 individuals—205 from each country.
This exchange marks the 15th negotiation facilitated by the UAE since the onset of the conflict following Russia's invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago.
Overall, the total number of prisoners exchanged in these negotiations has now reached 4,181.
The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude to both Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation in this latest exchange, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict and mitigating the humanitarian impacts resulting from the war, including the plight of refugees and prisoners.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly thanked the UAE for its role in this exchange, stating, 'Today, Ukraine has brought back 205 warriors.
Young and older men from almost all types and branches of the Armed Forces.
Defenders of Mariupol and the entire front line.' He acknowledged the efforts made by diverse partners, particularly the UAE, in facilitating the return of the captives.
Zelenskyy emphasized the continuous fight for the rights and welfare of Ukrainians in captivity, asserting the nation's commitment to repatriate all its detainees.
In a related development, last month saw the largest single prisoner exchange since the beginning of the conflict, with 538 prisoners being released through UAE mediation.
Additionally, in a recent communication, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who commended the UAE's mediating efforts and discussed enhancing bilateral relations.
The ongoing engagements underscore the UAE's active role in international diplomatic efforts aimed at alleviating the situation in Ukraine and fostering dialogue between the conflicting parties.
