UAE's 500 Dirham Banknote Awarded Best New Issue for 2025

UAE's 500 Dirham Banknote Awarded Best New Issue for 2025

The UAE Central Bank’s 500 Dirham banknote recognized for its innovative design and sustainability features.
The UAE Central Bank's 500 Dirham banknote has been recognized as the best new banknote issue for 2025 in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region.

This accolade was announced during the High Security Printing EMEA conference, which took place earlier this month in Basel, Switzerland.

This banknote is part of the UAE's third polymer series and is noted for its advanced security features, as well as a design that emphasizes the country's commitment to sustainability.

The Central Bank's approach includes technologies similar to those employed in the Dh1,000 banknote, which was awarded in 2023.

The 500 Dirham note showcases impressive three-dimensional designs and incorporates the largest surface-applied foil stripe in the region, setting a new standard in the Middle Eastern currency landscape.

The note was printed by Oumolat Security Printing, a subsidiary wholly owned by the Central Bank of the UAE, and entered circulation on November 30, 2023.

On the obverse side, the banknote prominently features the Terra Sustainability Pavilion located in Expo City Dubai, while the reverse highlights the Museum of the Future in Dubai, framed by the Emirates Towers and the Burj Khalifa, thereby reflecting significant architectural achievements and environmental initiatives within the UAE.

The Burj Khalifa notably operates on primarily solar energy, reinforcing the sustainability aspect.

Furthermore, the 500 Dirham banknote incorporates Braille symbols, affirming the Central Bank's commitment to inclusivity, providing essential support for visually impaired users in identifying the currency.

The shift towards polymer banknotes not only significantly increases their durability but also diminishes environmental impact, as polymer is fully recyclable.

This aligns with the UAE's overarching goal to transition towards a green economy.

Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, who serves as the Assistant Governor of Banking Operations and Support Services at the Central Bank of the UAE and Chairman of Oumolat Security Printing, expressed pride in the region's advancements in banking security and sustainable practices.

Al Dhaheri emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the design of the banknotes, ensuring accessibility for all users.
