UNICEF Declares Gaza as the Most Dangerous Place for Children Worldwide
The organization reports significant casualties among Palestinian children amid ongoing conflict.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that more than 45 Palestinian children have lost their lives in the past two days in the Gaza Strip due to continued Israeli military actions.
This alarming situation has prompted UNICEF to declare Gaza as 'the most deadly place in the world for children,' making a stark assertion that there is no safe area in the region.
Edward Gibilité, the regional director for UNICEF in the Middle East and North Africa, stated that children are facing targeting in locations deemed safe, such as hospitals, schools, shelters, and even displacement tents.
He emphasized that Gaza has become increasingly perilous for children over the past 19 months.
Furthermore, Gibilité highlighted that over 950 Palestinian children have been casualties of airstrikes in just the past two months.
Those who remain are enduring harsh conditions characterized by ongoing bombardment, severe shortages of food, water, and essential healthcare services.
The ongoing blockade restricting humanitarian aid entry has exacerbated the dire situation, Gibilité pointed out.
The threats facing children in Gaza are not limited to bombings and gunfire; they also encompass hunger, illness, and contaminated water.
Gibilité confirmed that violations of children's rights have become a daily and systemic occurrence.
He has called for urgent international action to end these abuses, ensure the protection of children from violence, and prevent loss of life.
Additionally, he reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire, adherence to international humanitarian law, facilitation of humanitarian aid access, protection of civilians, and release of detainees.
