AI Technology Enhances Tuberculosis Detection in UAE Medical Fitness Centres

Emirates Health Services Corporation introduces AI to expedite TB screening procedures for residency visas.
The Emirates Health Services Corporation has initiated the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in medical examination centres dedicated to residency visa processing.

This program is designed to improve the detection of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) through enhanced general chest X-ray imaging techniques.

Through the application of AI technology, X-ray images can now be analyzed in under one minute, significantly reducing the time required for radiologists to finalize medical reports.

This rapid analysis facilitates quicker diagnoses and allows for prompt initiation of treatment, which aids in reducing transmission rates of the disease and improving patient outcomes.

The integration of AI aligns with the corporation's ongoing commitment to enhance healthcare services across its facilities, aiming to elevate the quality and speed of diagnostic services provided to patients.

Since the deployment of AI-based tuberculosis screening technology in 2021, the effectiveness of TB detection has markedly improved, demonstrating a rise in accuracy from 80 percent to 98 percent as of 2024. This increase underscores the advancements made in AI-driven radiological processes.

Dr. Abdullah Al Naqbi, the Acting Executive Director of the Allied Health Services Sector at Emirates Health Services, highlighted that the adoption of AI in residency medical screening centres is pivotal for enhancing diagnostic precision.

He stated that the technology's ability to achieve 98 percent accuracy allows for quicker medical intervention and upholds strict healthcare delivery standards.

Dr. Al Naqbi also noted that leveraging digital innovation within the healthcare sector is essential for sustainability and aligns with the UAE’s future vision for healthcare development.

The corporation's initiatives are geared towards creating a seamless, patient-centered healthcare experience that meets global standards while reinforcing the UAE’s position as a leader in digital health technology.

Medical fitness screening is an obligatory component of residency visa processing in the UAE, where expatriates must obtain a medical fitness certificate to confirm the absence of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis.

This certificate is required for both initial residency visa applications and renewals, and screening services are accessible through designated medical centres and select public health facilities.
