Al Wahda and Al Wakrah Face Off in Emirati-Qatari Super Cup Challenge
Abu Dhabi's Al Wahda meets Qatar's Al Wakrah in the second edition of the UAE-Qatar Super Cup.
Al Wahda will host Al Wakrah at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi tonight, competing for the Challenge Cup as part of the finale of the second UAE-Qatar Super Cup edition.
Al Wahda is participating by virtue of winning the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank Cup last season, while Al Wakrah enters the match as champions of the latest edition of the Qatar Cup.
This marks the first-ever encounter between the two teams.
However, Al Wahda has history playing against Qatari clubs such as Al Duhail, Al Sadd, and Al Rayyan in the AFC Champions League in past years, notably defeating Al Rayyan six times with only one loss.
Currently, Al Wahda aims to secure a title this season to boost morale and meet fan expectations, following a recent exit from the UAE President's Cup in the round of 16 against Al Wasl and elimination from the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank Cup in the quarter-finals by Sharjah.
They are positioned third in the UAE Pro League after 12 rounds, amassing 22 points from six wins, four draws, and two losses, trailing league leaders Sharjah by nine points.
Playing on home ground, Al Wahda hopes to capitalize on local support to clinch their first international title, relying on their fan base, known as 'The Faithful', despite current discontent over the team's performance setbacks this season.
Al Wahda concluded their pre-match training yesterday at the game venue, under the direction of Slovenian coach Darko Milanič.
This presents an opportunity for Milanič to secure his first trophy in UAE football since taking over the coaching role last December, succeeding Norwegian Ronny Deila, who was dismissed due to poor results.
