Death Toll from Devastating Earthquake in Myanmar Surpasses 1,700
Myanmar's military-led government reports extensive casualties and damage following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
The death toll from the catastrophic earthquake that struck Myanmar has risen to over 1,700, according to an official statement from the military-led government.
Major General Zaw Min Tun announced the updated figures during an appearance on state television, MRTV. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, occurred around midday on Friday, causing widespread destruction, particularly in the capital Naypyidaw and the country's second-largest city, Mandalay.
In addition to the fatalities, approximately 3,400 individuals have sustained injuries, and over 300 people remain missing.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Mandalay, leading to the collapse of numerous buildings and significant damage to local infrastructure, including the city’s airport.
Relief efforts have encountered substantial obstacles, including damaged roads and bridges, disrupted communication lines, and the complexities of operating within a nation currently facing ongoing civil conflict.
In neighboring Thailand, the earthquake affected large areas, resulting in at least 18 confirmed deaths, with many casualties reported from a construction site in Bangkok where an incomplete high-rise building collapsed.
