California Wildfires Lead to Evacuations in Multiple Counties
Rapid spread of the Silver Fire prompts emergency measures and extensive evacuations.
A rapidly spreading wildfire in Central California has led to widespread evacuations across multiple counties after it expanded to over 1,000 acres (approximately 4.04 square kilometers) within a matter of hours.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire, reported that the Silver Fire ignited at 2:11 PM local time on Sunday in Inyo County near the state border with Nevada.
By Monday morning, the fire had grown to 1,250 acres (about 5.06 square kilometers) and remained uncontained.
Cal Fire attributed the rapid spread of the wildfire to wind gusts reaching speeds of 35 miles per hour, which created hazardous conditions and disrupted aerial firefighting efforts.
Cal Fire spokesperson Chloe Castillo stated that the wind patterns were highly erratic, causing directions to shift quickly.
Evacuation orders were issued for approximately 800 homes in areas including Luz in Inyo County, Shalfant in Mono County, and White Mountain Estates.
Additionally, about 50 kilometers of U.S. Route 6 were closed due to the fire's proximity.
Firefighting efforts are currently underway as officials continue to assess the situation and implement emergency response measures.
