Gulf Cooperation Council Leads Global Oil Production and Reserves in 2023
GCC countries dominate global oil and gas metrics according to recent statistical data.
Data from the Statistical Center for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries indicates that the GCC ranks first globally in several energy metrics.
The region achieved the top position in crude oil production, crude oil reserves, crude oil exports, and reserves of natural gas.
Additionally, the GCC ranks second worldwide for natural gas exports and third in marketed natural gas production.
In 2023, crude oil production from the GCC reached approximately 17 million barrels per day, accounting for 23.2% of global production, despite a 6.8% decrease in output compared to 2022. The crude oil reserves in the GCC region for the same year stood at approximately 511.9 billion barrels, representing 32.6% of the total global reserves, with an annual average growth rate of 0.3% from 2014 to 2023.
Crude oil exports from the GCC in 2023 were recorded at 12.4 million barrels per day, which corresponds to 28.2% of global exports, reflecting an 8.2% decline in exports compared to 2022. The region's combined exports of petroleum derivatives in 2023 reached 1.518 billion barrels, capturing 13.4% of global exports, marking a 7.1% increase from the previous year.
The imports of petroleum derivatives totaled 212.3 million barrels, with an average annual growth rate of 0.1%.
Among petroleum derivatives, diesel (gas oil) production saw the highest volume in 2023, amounting to 660.4 million barrels, followed by gasoline at 336.2 million barrels, and kerosene/jet fuel at 319.4 million barrels.
Production of fuel oil, naphtha, and liquefied petroleum gases registered 263.1 million barrels, 221.6 million barrels, and 103.3 million barrels, respectively.
In 2023, gasoline consumption in the GCC reached approximately 336.6 million barrels, while diesel consumption was 299.7 million barrels, with varying quantities for other derivatives ranging between 34.8 million to 268.3 million barrels.
In terms of natural gas, the GCC’s reserves in 2023 were about 44.195 billion cubic meters, representing 21.4% of global reserves, reflecting an increase of 0.2% from 2022. The region's natural gas exports in 2023 totaled 180.9 billion cubic meters, accounting for 13.1% of global exports, with a 2.5% average annual growth rate in exports from 2014 to 2023. The marketed natural gas production in the GCC reached approximately 464.2 billion cubic meters, which corresponds to 10.8% of global natural gas production, marking a 1.4% increase from the previous year.
In renewable energy metrics, the capacity of renewable energy plants in the GCC reached 10,742 megawatts in 2023, representing a growth of 74.7% compared to 2022. This increase in capacity has been driven by the implementation of policies aimed at transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
The energy produced from these plants in 2023 was approximately 14,403 gigawatt-hours, reflecting a growth rate of 72.4% compared to 2022.
