Indian Expat Undergoes Pioneering Scar-Free Hysterectomy in Dubai

Advanced vNOTES technique offers expedited recovery and reduced postoperative pain.
In a notable medical achievement, a 56-year-old Indian expatriate, Sarojadevi Selvaraja, has successfully undergone a scar-free hysterectomy at Aster Hospital Al Qusais in Dubai.

This advanced medical procedure employs Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES), which is designed to eliminate the need for abdominal incisions, consequently leading to faster recovery times, decreased postoperative pain, and improved precision in surgical outcomes.

Sarojadevi Selvaraja had been experiencing postmenopausal bleeding over the past two years, which intensified significantly in January, prompting her to seek medical attention.

Upon evaluation, medical professionals identified precancerous changes in her uterine lining, necessitating a hysterectomy to prevent potential further complications.

Given her medical history, which includes high blood pressure and prior gynecological interventions, her healthcare team recommended the hysterectomy.

They opted for the vNOTES approach, which is associated with minimal invasiveness and favorable recovery features.

Unlike conventional surgical methods requiring abdominal cuts, vNOTES allows physicians to perform the entire procedure through the natural vaginal passage.

This is facilitated by a specialized instrument that creates a workspace, enabling the surgical team to utilize a miniature camera and sophisticated instruments for the operation, significantly minimizing blood loss during the process.

The surgical team, directed by Dr. Fathima Safa, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, meticulously removed the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries using this minimally invasive technique.

The advantages of vNOTES were evident; Sarojadevi experienced minimal discomfort and was discharged from the hospital within 24 hours, allowing her to return to her normal routine more swiftly than would typically be expected following traditional hysterectomy techniques.

Dr. Safa underscored the revolutionary aspects of employing innovative techniques in gynecological surgery, stating that vNOTES merges the advantages of traditional vaginal surgery with the accuracy provided by contemporary surgical methods.

It ensures a rapid recovery period and alleviates pain while leaving no visible scars.

Dr. Aysha Salam, a fellow Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist at Aster Hospital Sharjah, commented on the significance of the vNOTES technique, describing it as a pivotal advancement for women undergoing gynecologic surgery.

She noted that this method not only shortens recovery intervals but also lessens postoperative discomfort, greatly enhancing the overall patient experience.

Aster Hospitals has committed to integrating such progressive surgical techniques to improve women's healthcare.

Sarojadevi expressed her initial concerns regarding surgery but highlighted the reassurances provided by her doctors concerning the advantages of this advanced surgical approach.

She emphasized her gratitude for the care received from Dr. Fathima Safa, Dr. Aysha Salam, and the medical staff, noting the absence of noticeable scars and reduced pain associated with her quick recovery.

The vNOTES technique presents numerous benefits compared to traditional surgical options.

Performing the procedure via the vaginal canal allows for the elimination of visible scarring, the promotion of quicker recovery, and earlier resumption of daily activities.

Postoperative assessments indicate many patients can return to work within two to three weeks following surgery, with some possibly taking four to six weeks based on individual recovery rates.

Adverse postoperative symptoms are minimal, significantly lowering the requirement for potent pain medications.

The utilization of a compact camera during surgery affords surgeons a comprehensive and detailed perspective, thus ensuring a safer and more precise operation while minimizing complications such as pronounced bleeding or internal scar tissue formation.

Since its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019, vNOTES has garnered international acclaim and is being increasingly employed for diverse gynecologic procedures, including ovarian cyst removal, management of ectopic pregnancies, and surgeries aimed at improving pelvic support.
