Academics Advocate for Empowering Research in Sustainability
Emphasis on collaboration between educational institutions and sustainability-related organizations amidst calls for investment in scientific research.
Academics have underscored the necessity of empowering research in various sustainability-related fields, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration between higher education institutions and organizations focused on sustainability.
They advocate for investment in scientific research, technology, and artificial intelligence for future generations.
Dr. Dalal Matar Al-Shamsi, an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and Director of the National Water and Energy Center at the United Arab Emirates University, stated, "Higher education institutions in the country are engaged in pioneering student research that contributes to enhancing environmental sustainability." She added, "The UAE has presented an exemplary model in environmental conservation and resource preservation."
Furthermore, Dr. Al-Shamsi noted, "National talents within higher education institutions contribute to sustainable development and overcoming climate change challenges, emphasizing the key role these institutions play in formulating scientific solutions and recommendations that support environmental sustainability." She urged higher education leaders to prioritize empowering research in sustainability areas.
Dr. Mohammed Anayrat, President of Al-Afaq University College, expressed that "academic institutions bear the responsibility of promoting a culture of sustainability by encouraging students to conduct and publish their scientific research."
The college aims to achieve this by integrating sustainability concepts into curricula, organizing awareness-raising events to enhance student and community consciousness, and promoting research in environmental preservation, water, and climate change, as well as launching environmental initiatives to foster community responsibility toward natural resources.
Dr. Anayrat disclosed future plans for the college to organize further activities and initiatives related to environmental sustainability, including an Environmental Sustainability Week featuring activities on water, renewable energy, and recycling, as well as launching competitions for innovative environmental solutions to stimulate students to provide creative answers to sustainability challenges.
He also mentioned plans to establish partnerships with research institutions to investigate water-related challenges and find sustainable solutions.
Dr. Ahmed Sabih, a faculty member at Al-Afaq University College and a holder of a doctorate in artificial intelligence, announced that the college recently organized World Water Day, aiming to emphasize the significance of water as a fundamental element for life sustainability and environmental development.
In addition to the college's commitment to its academic and societal responsibilities, this event was designed to raise awareness about water scarcity issues and the importance of prudent consumption, aligning with the UAE's vision of achieving environmental sustainability and conserving natural resources for future generations.
