EU Trade Commissioner voices concerns during discussions with US trade representatives amid escalating tariff tensions.
The European Union (EU) has expressed strong opposition to the recently imposed tariffs by the United States, referring to them as detrimental and unjustified.
This statement follows a video conference held between EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Jamison Greer to address the extensive tariffs that were introduced under the administration of former President
Donald Trump targeting European imports.
Commissioner Šefčovič reported that the discussions lasted for two hours and were described as candid.
He conveyed in a post on social media platform X that he made it clear during the talks that the US tariffs were harmful and that the trade relationship between the EU and the US requires a new approach.
Šefčovič emphasized the EU’s commitment to serious negotiations while also indicating readiness to defend its interests.
In his statement, Šefčovič remarked, 'We will remain in contact,' signaling a continued dialogue on this critical issue.
Details surrounding the discussions have not been immediately disclosed by either party.
The tariffs were initially announced earlier this week by President Trump, who instituted a basic 10% tariff on imports from numerous countries, with several nations facing substantially higher rates.
Specifically, the EU has seen a 20% tariff imposed on its exported goods to the US.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is finalizing its first package of retaliatory measures and is preparing to implement further steps to safeguard its companies should negotiations regarding tariffs with Washington fail.
