Israel and Hamas Reach Ceasefire Agreement as Challenges Emerge
A tenuous ceasefire deal in Gaza is set to begin amid last-minute tensions and ongoing violence.
In a significant development aimed at de-escalating the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas, a ceasefire agreement has been reached after intense negotiations in Doha.
The ceasefire, coupled with a prisoner exchange, is scheduled to commence on Sunday, following a series of complications that nearly derailed the talks at the eleventh hour.
The agreement, approved by Israel's security cabinet, includes the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that negotiation teams had finalized the terms, which overcame last-minute hurdles thanks to the intervention of various mediators.
The ceasefire deal, which has been ratified by an Israeli ministerial vote despite some internal dissent, includes plans for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Israel's Ministry of Justice revealed a list of 95 Palestinian prisoners slated for release starting Sunday.
Further, the Israel Prison Service has indicated preparations to free up to 1700 Palestinian detainees as part of the first phase of this agreement.
Notably, among those set for release are 250 to 300 Palestinian security prisoners serving life sentences.
However, the list also includes 47 individuals who were re-arrested after being released in a similar prisoner swap in 2011. Israel plans to manage the release process independently, ostensibly to prevent public celebrations within its borders.
Simultaneously, Hamas is expected to release the first batch of Israeli hostages, reportedly numbering 33, in return.
The exchange will occur over seven phases lasting up to 42 days, according to Israeli news outlets.
The agreement coincides with troubling news from Gaza, where Israeli strikes have intensified.
The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza reported a death toll of 88 Palestinians in the last 24 hours alone, contributing to a devastating 15-month conflict that has claimed over 46,876 Palestinian lives as per official estimates.
Adding to the complexity, a technical meeting involving Egyptian, Qatari, American, and Israeli delegations took place in Cairo, aiming to finalize the mechanisms of implementing the ceasefire and prisoner exchange.
Despite the ongoing violence, this newly brokered agreement provides a fragile hope for reducing hostilities, though it remains to be seen how effectively it will be enacted amidst prevailing tensions.
