Israel Seeks Answers from Hamas on Bibas Family Amid Ongoing Hostage Negotiations
Family Expresses Disappointment as Their Names Do Not Appear in Recent Release
Israel has called on Hamas to provide information regarding the whereabouts and condition of the Bibas family, expressing deep concern about their fate.
This follows a statement released by the family's relatives on Instagram, conveying their disappointment at not seeing their names among those freed in the latest exchange.
Israeli army spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, commented after four Israeli hostages crossed the border back into Israel, emphasizing the continuous efforts to progress under the agreement for returning hostages.
He noted that Hamas had not adhered to the agreement to prioritize civilian return, reiterating Israel's insistence on the return of individuals including Eran Yehud, Shiri Bibas, and her family, highlighting significant concern for their safety and a hopeful expectation for their impending return.
Hagari praised the mediators involved in the negotiations and urged commitment to the terms of the agreement.
Meanwhile, the Bibas family shared their sentiments in their first Instagram post following the release, stating, 'On the 477th day, our souls found no rest last night.
At 4:00 PM, when the announcement list was published, our world collapsed once more.
Despite being prepared for such an outcome, we hoped to see Shiri and the children on the list.
When we watch the news, our pain, our struggle, and the significant discourse about the complexity and disaster of their absence from the list disappear from the broadcasters' discussion.'
Their statement continued by thanking supporters for not giving up hope, stressing that their demands for answers and hope persist, and that the situation remains unresolved.
The Bibas family was captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023, from Kibbutz Nir Oz. The family comprises father Yarden, mother Shiri, and their two children, Ariel and Kfir—the youngest of whom was nine months old at the time of their capture.
According to reports in Hebrew media, Shiri and her children were transferred to another militant faction in Gaza, with Hamas later claiming they were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
A video of the family alive shortly after October 7 was also released by the Israeli army.
In a separate video, the father called on the Israeli government to return the bodies of his wife and children for burial in Israel.
In a related development, on Saturday, Hamas handed over four Israeli female hostages to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza.
This is part of an ongoing ceasefire agreement which also saw Israel release 200 Palestinian detainees from its prisons.
