The South Korean actor discusses the struggles of the film amid broader difficulties in the Korean cinema industry.
Renowned South Korean actor Song Joong-ki addressed the commercial underperformance of his latest film, 'Bogotá: City of the Lost,' during a post-screening question and answer session.
The event, attended by co-stars Lee Hee-joon and Lee Sung-min, highlighted a candid discussion on the current state of the Korean film industry.
Song Joong-ki, who is widely recognized for his roles in successful Korean television dramas such as 'Descendants of The Sun' and 'Vincenzo,' became visibly emotional as he reflected on the film's box office struggles.
The film, which premiered on December 31, 2024, has garnered roughly 400,000 viewers by January 15, falling significantly short of its estimated breakeven point of 3 million admissions.
During the Q&A session, Lee Sung-min also shared his observations, recounting the sparse attendance at screenings and describing it as disheartening for actors and filmmakers alike.
He remarked on the challenges faced when releasing films in such difficult times for the industry.
Song Joong-ki echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the broader struggles within the Korean cinema landscape.
Despite these challenges, he expressed gratitude for having the opportunity to bring 'Bogotá: City of the Lost' to theaters.
He stated, "Korean cinema is in a really tough spot right now, but I'm grateful that our film is being screened at all.
I’ve worked harder than ever to promote it, hoping to make it known and present it well."
His heartfelt comments underscored a challenging period for both himself and the industry as a whole, marked by consecutive box office disappointments with previous films like 'Hopeless' in 2023 and 'My Name Is Loh Kiwan.' Nevertheless, he concluded his speech on an emotional note, expressing appreciation to those involved in and supporting the film.
