Thousands of Counterfeit Reviews and Phony Businesses: The Extensive Scam Exposed on Google Search and Maps.

Thousands of Counterfeit Reviews and Phony Businesses: The Extensive Scam Exposed on Google Search and Maps.

An investigation has uncovered a global fraud operation that sells counterfeit business listings and reviews on Google Maps. This revelation of a large-scale fraud scheme, which deals in fake business profiles and reviews, serves as a significant warning that ratings, reviews, views, likes, and followers can be purchased—amounting to millions online—and should not be accepted without thorough verification. Although companies like Google are making efforts to combat fraudulent accounts that pay for significant profits, consumers must also be vigilant when searching for services on the internet.
A probe that kicked off following a complaint from a locksmith in Texas unveiled an international fraud operation that sold tens of thousands of counterfeit business listings via Google Maps. The scammers seized control of existing business profiles and manufactured positive reviews to lure unsuspecting clients. Here’s how you can identify similar schemes and shield yourself from them.

Google has pinpointed more than 10,000 fraudulent business listings on its widely used Google Maps application, which is accessible on nearly every smartphone, and has initiated legal proceedings against those accountable for the deception. This information was disclosed by CBS Network yesterday (Wednesday). According to a thorough investigation carried out by the company, this fraud ring created and marketed fake business profiles on the platform.

The Fraud Network and Its Techniques
The scam first came to light when a licensed locksmith in Texas noticed that an unlicensed locksmith was using his name on Google Maps. A local investigation unveiled a more extensive operation, prompting a large-scale inquiry. Ultimately, Google opted to eliminate over 10,000 fraudulent listings from its maps.

These deceptive listings ranged from completely fictitious businesses to hijacked profiles of legitimate companies, which were copied and modified to promote unauthorized entities. Google's legal advisor, Halima Dlayne Prado, stated that upon receiving an alert regarding such fraud, the company swiftly takes action to identify similar fraudulent entries.

This matter isn’t new; Google has been tackling fake businesses that provide services via Google Maps for years. The scammers would establish a profile for an existing company that either lacked an official profile or was not actively managed, adding a legitimate address, a real website, or photos, but substituting their own phone number for the genuine one.

How the Fraudsters Operate
Once the con artists created these fake profiles, Google Maps would frequently recommend the fraudulent company based on user searches. Nevertheless, users would unknowingly connect with impostors posing as legitimate licensed businesses. In some instances, it was even suggested that Google benefitted from this, as fake companies would pay to promote themselves, elevating their positions in relevant search results.

Google indicated that most of these bogus businesses were locksmiths, towing companies, and other emergency services. During such critical situations, individuals often search for local professionals on Google Maps, even if they have never previously utilized their services. Regrettably, instead of reaching a genuine professional, they often fall victim to a fraud.

The Growing Sophistication of Fraudsters
Halima Dlayne Prado noted that the scammers are becoming increasingly adept. They collaborated with agents globally and even utilized social media to broaden their fraudulent networks. According to Google, the scammers also marketed fake positive reviews for businesses, further obscuring any negative feedback on social media platforms. In one legal case, Google presented an example of a Facebook post containing “5-star reviews” for entirely fictitious businesses.

Common Tactics Used by Scammers
Google’s investigation uncovered several tactics employed by these fraudsters. In some instances, customers would contact a legitimate company, but the number would be intercepted and redirected through a lead generation service that would connect them to the scammers. More often than not, the fraudster arriving to provide the service would impose exorbitant prices, exploiting the customer's urgent need to get the job done. Because many customers are under duress to receive the service, they are compelled to pay these inflated fees.

How to Avoid Falling for These Scams
Google advises exercising caution, even in urgent situations. Consumers should meticulously verify the website address and phone number of the company they are contacting, ensuring they match the Google Maps listing. A warning sign should be raised if the company requests excessive information, like an ID number, or insists on unconventional payment methods such as gift cards or wire transfers.

To combat such fraud, Google has created a variety of tools, both automated and guided by human analysts. The company claims it has removed or blocked approximately 12 million counterfeit business profiles annually over the past two years. Additionally, Google announced it would donate any compensation it receives from legal actions regarding this issue to organizations combatting fraud.

Google’s Commitment to Combating Fraud
Google is dedicated to ensuring Google Maps serves as a secure platform for both businesses and consumers. The company has actively engaged in investigating fraudulent activities and instituting measures to prevent the increase of fake business listings and reviews. The recent legal actions underscore its ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of its services and safeguard users from fraudulent practices.

Additional Insights on Fake Business Listings
Fraudulent business listings on platforms like Google Maps not only deceive consumers by directing them to scams but also damage the reputation of legitimate businesses. Scammers can distort the competitive landscape by manipulating search results, giving unfair advantages to fake businesses that mislead customers. Google’s actions to eliminate these listings are a crucial step toward protecting both consumers and businesses from these harmful activities.

As the use of online platforms and mapping services expands, the potential for fraud in these areas rises as well. Both businesses and consumers must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to platforms like Google to prevent the spread of fake listings.
