Trials of Self-Driving RoboTaxi Service Commence in Abu Dhabi
Autogo initiates testing of its autonomous taxi fleet with plans for full deployment by 2026.
Autogo, a UAE-based autonomous mobility solutions company, has commenced trials for its self-driving RoboTaxi service in Abu Dhabi.
This initiative, reported by the state news agency Wam, aligns with Abu Dhabi's vision to enhance urban mobility through advanced technology.
The trials are being conducted in collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of Abu Dhabi.
The RoboTaxis are designed with an advanced electric platform and are integrated with artificial intelligence systems, allowing for accurate and consistent driving while maintaining real-time responsiveness to the traffic environment.
Sean Teo, managing director of Kintsugi Holding, which owns Autogo, emphasized the importance of these trials, stating that they signify a substantial change in urban mobility aimed at improving road safety and promoting sustainable transport solutions.
In addition to the local efforts, Autogo is working alongside Apollo Go, a subsidiary of Chinese technology company Baidu.
This partnership focuses on gathering real-world data, interacting with the public, and preparing for a wide-scale rollout of the RoboTaxi service in Abu Dhabi by 2026.
Recent reports indicated that Dubai Taxi Company is also planning to implement an autonomous taxi service by the first quarter of 2026, further supporting the emirate's strategic mobility goals.
The UAE has made significant strides to position itself as a frontrunner in smart mobility, incorporating the latest technologies into its transportation systems.
In October 2023, Dubai began supervised trials of driverless vehicles on public roads, notably granting a trial permit to Cruise, a US-based self-driving technology company affiliated with General Motors and Honda Motor.
Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, a partnership between Uber and China's WeRide successfully launched the region's first commercial driverless mobility service in December.
Furthermore, Abu Dhabi hosts a dedicated fleet of driverless taxis operating on Yas Island, managed by TXAI, marking the UAE's entry into autonomous taxi services.
