President-elect Donald Trump suggests a potential delay on TikTok's imminent ban as users and companies await clarity.
President-elect
Donald Trump indicated on Saturday that he might grant TikTok a 90-day extension from a potential ban in the United States after he assumes office on Monday.
This development comes amid uncertainty regarding the fate of the app, which boasts 170 million American users, just ahead of the ban that is set to take effect on Sunday.
In an interview with NBC, Trump stated, 'A 90-day extension is likely, as it is appropriate.
If I decide to do so, I will probably announce it on Monday.'
TikTok warned late Friday that it would halt its operations in the United States on Sunday unless President
Joe Biden's administration assured companies like Apple and Google that they would not face legal action once the ban is enforced.
Under a law enacted last year, which was unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday, the platform has until Sunday to sever ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or shut down its operations in the U.S. to address national security concerns.
The White House dismissed TikTok's warning on Friday as a mere tactic, underscoring on Saturday that it is up to the incoming Trump administration to decide on the matter, heightening the likelihood of the ban being implemented on Sunday.
White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre asserted in a statement, 'We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take action in the next few days before the Trump administration takes over on Monday.'
TikTok has not yet responded to requests for comment on the latest statements from the White House.
The uncertainty surrounding the app's future has led users, predominantly young people, to seek alternatives, including the China-based Red Note.
Additionally, shares of companies like Meta and Snapchat have seen a rise this month ahead of the ban, as investors speculate on potential user shifts and increased advertising revenue.
