Amid ongoing tensions, discussions between the United States and Russia center on territorial claims in Ukraine.
The White House announced on Wednesday that U.S. President
Donald Trump has begun a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This development occurs against the backdrop of reported demands from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is seeking official recognition from the U.S. for four Ukrainian regions that Moscow has declared under its sovereignty, as well as Crimea.
According to a report from a Russian publication, unnamed sources who attended a private meeting with Putin revealed that the Russian President desires U.S. acknowledgment of the territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson as part of Russia, in addition to Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
The report further suggests that in exchange for such recognition, should it occur in the near future, Putin would pledge not to pursue claims over the Ukrainian coastal city of Odesa and other Ukrainian territories.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to inquiries regarding the report by stating that the topics discussed between Putin and Trump during their telephone conversation on Tuesday did not include the idea of U.S. recognition of the claimed territories.
However, he confirmed that the conflict in Ukraine was addressed in a closed meeting on Tuesday with a group of prominent Russian business leaders.
Peskov did not specify whether the issue of U.S. recognition of the four regions and Crimea was raised during that private discussion.
