Dubai Police Arrest 127 Beggars in Ramadan Crackdown
Ongoing 'Combat Begging' campaign yields significant arrests and financial seizures.
Dubai Police have arrested 127 individuals for begging and confiscated over Dh50,000 in money during the initial weeks of Ramadan, as part of their 'Combat Begging' campaign.
This initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Suspects and Criminal Phenomena and is supported by various strategic partners, including the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Municipality, and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department.
The campaign emphasizes the authorities' commitment to maintaining public safety and protecting the UAE’s positive image.
The 'Combat Begging' program aims to eliminate begging practices through a combination of proactive enforcement measures and public education to promote lawful means of assistance.
Colonel Ahmad Al Adeedi, Deputy Director of the Department of Suspects and Criminal Phenomena, described the initiative as one of the most effective efforts of the police force, contributing to a noticeable decline in begging incidents over recent years.
He stated that the police implement a detailed annual security plan to monitor areas where begging commonly occurs and deploy additional patrol units in these hotspots.
Colonel Al Adeedi also highlighted the potential correlation between begging and other criminal activities, such as theft and pickpocketing.
He discouraged individuals in need from seeking financial aid through begging and instead recommended that they approach licensed charities and government agencies that offer financial support and iftar meals during Ramadan.
Captain Abdullah Khamis, Head of the Anti-Begging Section, pointed out that many beggars may misrepresent their financial circumstances.
He called upon the public to contribute to registered charities rather than providing direct financial assistance to beggars, as this could unintentionally support criminal behavior.
Dubai authorities have provided several channels for the community to report begging activities, including:
- Calling 901
- Using the 'Police Eye' service available on the Dubai Police smart application
- Submitting reports via the E-Crime platform at www.ecrime.ae
These enforcement actions reflect the Dubai Police's ongoing efforts to foster a secure environment and uphold community standards amidst the challenges associated with begging.
